There are free online and in-person services that prospective newcomers and their families can access as soon as they are selected to immigrate to Canada. These services are provided to them free of charge by the settlement service providers listed below while they are still overseas. Many service providers offer general information such as:

  • understanding life in Canada,
  • finding a job in Canada, and
  • accessing other free settlement services when you arrive in Canada.

Other settlement service providers offer very specific information. To find the best service providers to fit individual needs, explore the list of service providers below and select according to one's profession or destination (city or province). Individuals are allowed to get services from as many different service providers as they need, and always at no cost.

Services are available online or in-person to:

  • permanent residents,
  • refugees,
  • protected persons, and
  • live-in caregivers.

Abbotsford Community Services Society – Take Off: India to Canada

Services: Provides settlement information on Canadian culture, customs and daily life, housing, employment, education, banking, and healthcare to newcomers coming from India.

Accessible Counselling and Community Employment Services (ACCES) – Canadian Employment Connections

Services: Helps internationally-educated newcomers find jobs in their field. Targeted sectors include IT, finance, engineering, sales, marketing, supply chain, and human resource professionals.

British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA) – Integrating Newcomers

Services: Helps newcomers find jobs in construction in British Columbia.

Calgary Region Immigrant Employment Council (CRIEC) - SmartPathways E-Mentoring & Other Supports for Pre-Arrival Internationally Trained Professionals (ITPs)

Services: Provides newcomers moving to Calgary with links to Calgary employers and mentors.

Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF) - Preparing Newcomers for Apprenticeship Training and Employment in the Skilled Trades

Services: Helps newcomers in skilled trades professions arrive better prepared for the Canadian workplace by providing information and opportunities to practice and assess their skills.

CARE Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses – Pre-Arrival Supports and Services (PASS)

Services: Helps internationally educated nurses connect with sector specific practices, institutions, processes and regulatory bodies.

Colleges and Institutes Canada (CiCan) – Planning for Canada/ Canadian Immigrant Integration program (CIIP)

Services: Prepares economic and family class immigrants for economic and settlement success in Canada with a full-day orientation session, an individual planning session specific to your occupation and province of destination and referrals to over 40 Canadian partners offering more pre-departure help. Delivery method:

Services: Provides information and services to Francophone newcomers and refugees who are intending to live in British Columbia.

Food Processing Human Resources Council - Pre-arrival Food Safety Management Training Program

Services: Provide newcomers with knowledge of the food industry in Canada and program certificates recognized by employers.

Immigrant Centre Manitoba Inc. - The Pre-Arrival Centre (PAC)

Services: Provides clients with information about the Winnipeg region. Also connects clients to Manitoba-based stakeholders.

Immigrant Employment Council of BC Society (IEC-BC) - Facilitating Access to Skilled Trades in British Columbia (FASTBC)

Services: Helps newcomers in the Automotive Service Technician, Carpentry and Power Engineering trades to obtain jobs in BC.

Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) of Canada Inc. - GO Talent Canada

Services: Provides newcomers with information and services specific to the information and communications technology (ICT) sector.

International Organization for Migration (IOM) - Canadian Orientation Abroad (COA)

Services: Pre-departure orientation program for refugees, with a component targeting refugee youth. There are three to five-day group orientation sessions, with handouts and support services (childminding, interpretation and transportation help).

Settlement Online Pre-Arrival (SOPA) - an ISANS initiative

Services: By participating in SOPA, immigrants destined for the Canadian labour market will develop job search and communication skills, be connected to local resources, and arrive in Canada better prepared, more confident and enter the workforce sooner.
