Help:Rich editor enable/disable

The wiki rich editor allows a user to forgo the use of Mediawiki coding, editing the content of a wiki page in a manner akin to that of a word document.

There are a number of inherent advantages to this approach:

  1. It enables users to preview changes to a page in real time while editing a wiki page, thereby minimizing the need/tendency for/of wiki users to have to continually preview content throughout the duration of the editing process.
  2. It affords wiki users the ability to alter wiki content within a simplified and/or more traditional forum, thereby eliminating the need for wiki users to possess and/or evidence an underlying and/or advanced understanding of Mediawiki coding in order to produce relatively routine effects.
  3. It is a forum farmiliar to most wiki users, and is, for the most part, the forum favoured by the average wiki user.

Nonetheless, some wiki users may still desire and/or require the ability to edit wiki page content by way of Mediawiki coding rather than the rich editor (for instance, when duplicating content from other wiki pages, and/or producing effects not available within the rich editor's tool bar),; for instance, when replicating content from other pages).

With this in mind, the rich editor, as well as its setting as a user's default editing forum, can be disabled. Contained below are instructions concerning how to alternate between rich and Wikitext editors, as well as on how to disable the rich editor as one's default editing forum.

Enabling the rich editor

To re-enable the rich editor while editing a document, simply click the "Rich Editor" button located on the top right of the editor's text box.

Disabling as a preferred setting

Contained within this section are instructions on how to disable the rich editor as your default editing forum.

NOTE: To enlarge an image, simply left click the image and/or right click and open in new tab.

Step 1: click "my preferences"

While logged in to your user account, click on the "my preferences" button located on the top right of the tool bar (contained within the wiki scaffolded masthead template, visible while navigating any page).

Step 2: click "misc"

Within the "your preferences" page, click on the "misc" tab located along the top right of the preferences tool bar.

Step 3: checkmark "start with rich editor disabled"

Check-mark the "Start with rich editor disabled" option from the misc options list. Conversely, to set the rich editor as your default editing forum, simply repeat the preceding steps, and uncheck rather than check the "Start with rich editor disabled" option.

Note: Ensure that you do not confuse the "Start with rich editor disabled" option with the "disable rich editor" option. These are two distinct options and produce very different effects.

Checking the "Start with rich editor disabled" button still reserves for a user the ability to alternate between the rich and wikitext editors, whereas the "Disable rich editor" option does not reserve this ability. Rather, the rich editor will be permanently disabled and the "Rich editor" button will be removed within the editing forum. It then can only be reenabled by way of unchecking the "Disable rich editor" option in the Preferences-misc option menu.

Step 4: click "save"

Be sure the click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page after making any changes to the preferences-misc-options menu, or any changes made to settings will not be enacted.
