Connecting Internationally Trained Professionals and Newcomers with Successful Employment in the Competitive Local Labour Market - Leveraging Employment Support Services for newcomer clients: Practices & Insights.

The aims of this session were:

  • To understand how internationally trained professionals and newcomers can position themselves for a successful career
  • To identify labour market trends
  • To identify employment challenges for IEPs and newcomers
  • To understand community services in employment, training and career management for appropriate referrals and interventions with newcomer and IEP job seekers
  • To identify labour market trends and challenges for newcomers and IEPs
  • To identify effective strategies for successful integration into the Canadian workforce
  • To meet new professionals from diverse communities and professions


Joanna Samuels

Team Lead, Employer Services & Job Developer/Facilitator, JVS Toronto

Joanna Samuels, B.A., B.Ed., CMF is the team lead of employer services as well as a job developer, job coach and facilitator at JVS Toronto. Joanna has over seven years experience of providing customized employment support services for internationally trained professionals and new immigrants from various sectors. Also, Joanna helps employers with recruitment, selection, diversity, inclusion, employment equity and corporate social responsibility. She is a Certified Career Management Fellow, Life Skills Coach and Certified Personality Dimensions Facilitator, and is currently working towards a Master in Education specializing in leadership and administration.

Steffen Allen

Director of Business Systems & Manager of Recruitment, Zylog Systems (Canada) Ltd.

Steffen Allen is the IT division’s recruitment manager at Zylog Systems (Canada) Ltd as well as the Assistant technical director of business systems. He has over 13 years of recruiting experience in both permanent and contingent staffing, for roles ranging from front-line to director-level IT positions. Steffen brings to his position a strong technical background acquired during his tenure with technical organizations such as Oracle.

Mike Van Doorn

Director, Sr. Manager, Staffing and Recruiting at Scotiabank

Mike van Doorn, CHRP, is the Sr. Manager of Recruiting at Scotiabank. His personal mandate is to continually improve the recruiting and onboarding experience for the key stakeholders: Candidate, Business Line, Recruiter and Employee. Mike currently manages a team of 10 recruiters supporting contact centre, central mortgage and student recruitment across Canada, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Previously he managed a team of 18 recruiters supporting Global Markets, Information Technology, Commercial Banking, International, Global Risk Management, Wholesale, Canadian Banking, Capital Markets and Wealth. Mike started his career in IT recruiting for the financial, pharmaceutical and software verticals.

Guilherme Dias

Director, Strategic Talent Management at Pitney Bowes

Glem Dias is the Director of Strategic Talent Management at Pitney Bowes Inc. He has global responsibility for managing the design and development of succession management, high potential leadership development, talent mobility, and mentoring.

His diverse experience comes from industries such as Investment Banking, Software, Telecommunications, Pharmaceuticals, and Retail. He has worked in the US, Canada, India and has done assignments in Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America. His prior roles include heading up leadership development at Wal-Mart Canada and HR Leader for Morgan Stanley India.

He is the recipient of: 2008 Pitney Bowes Impact Award; 2009 Talent Management Award and 2010 Innovation in Employer Branding Award by the HRPA; 2011 Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award.

He regularly speaks at leading Talent Management conferences, speaks at Business Schools and in the media. He served on the Federal Government’s External Advisory Committee on Talent Management.
